No NBN box on the wall — instead you'll be plugging your router into a regular phone-style wall socket. Your router needs a built-in VDSL modem (most standard WiFi routers from overseas don't have one).

If the DSL light won't turn on or keeps flashing, it's very often a fault in the street-side copper — a flooded underground pit is a classic cause after heavy Sydney rain. We've also seen ISPs push a “speed boost” upgrade to FTTN lines (from 100M towards 500M) that wasn't configured properly on their end, causing repeated random disconnections that had nothing to do with the customer's own equipment.

A Camperdown apartment near USYD (an old red-brick block on Purkis St) had 2–3 phone-style wall sockets, and only one was the live “master” port. We used a proper line tester to find the working socket, configured the Telstra FTTN/VDSL parameters on a TP-Link router, and got a full 50Mbps once the DSL light stayed solid.
