Look for a cable modem connected to a round coaxial (TV-style) cable rather than a phone line or fibre lead-in. In our experience, HFC boxes are the ones most often mounted right next to the TV or living room wall — which means every time someone unplugs the TV or a robot vacuum dock, they can accidentally pull the modem's cable loose too.

If the Downstream/Upstream lights are flashing and Online won't turn on, that's usually an area-wide coax fault rather than anything inside the house — worth checking the NBN Outage Map before troubleshooting further. We also regularly deal with HFC boxes located frustratingly far from the bedrooms that need coverage, since HFC lead-ins are often placed based on the old pay-TV cabling, not where a modern household actually needs WiFi.

A 1,200sqm House with a 300sqm floor plan had its HFC NBN box stuck near the garage, with the furthest bedroom the length of the whole house away. Rather than run new internal cabling, we mapped the family's usage (a gamer needing a wired-quality connection, everyone else just needing reliable coverage) and deployed a WiFi 7 Mesh system — a dedicated node with a direct cable for the gaming room, and blanket Mesh coverage everywhere else, with zero new holes drilled.
