A student near Harris Park reported a strange one: WiFi showed connected on every device, but only a single device could actually reach the internet — whichever grabbed it first. The flat’s rent included internet over the building’s Opticomm fibre (the retailer appeared to be Harbour ISP), the Nokia modem-router had exactly one status light, and no computer in the home could take an Ethernet cable. A remote video session narrowed it to the wiring; the on-site visit found the live line sitting in a LAN port and a dead nbn cable in the WAN port. Round trip on the road: three hours.

With the live line in a LAN port, the router never brought up its own internet connection. The provider hands out one connection on that line — it leaked straight through the LAN side to whichever device asked first. One lucky winner, everyone else stuck with no usable IP.活线插进 LAN 口后,路由器自己根本没有建立上网连接。运营商在这条线上只提供一路连接——它直接从 LAN 侧漏给了最先请求的设备。一台设备中奖,其余设备全都拿不到能上网的 IP。
This failure pattern is worth remembering because it looks exactly like a WiFi problem and is not one.
- The WiFi radio was fine — every device associated normally, which is why reboots and re-joining the network changed nothing.
- Plugged into LAN, the provider’s single connection bypassed the router’s own uplink and went to one device, so the “working” device kept changing depending on who reconnected first.
- The moment the live line moved to the WAN port, the router took the connection itself and shared it out to every device in the flat.

Three things made this a genuinely hard remote case, and a slow on-site one.
- No wired-capable computer in the home, so the usual cable-by-cable elimination could not be done over video.
- The Nokia unit — a 2023 model that looked carrier-customised — has a single status light. One LED cannot tell you whether the problem is the line, the login or the LAN.
- The internet came bundled with the rent, so the student had no account details and no certainty about who the retailer even was; everything had to be worked out from the router side.
There was also a trap waiting on-site: the flat kept a second, powered-but-inactive nbn setup, and its dead cable was the one sitting in the WAN port looking perfectly legitimate.

The fix itself took minutes once seen: dead cable out of the WAN port, live line into it, and the Nokia came straight back with every device online. We did try promoting the student’s new ASUS to be the main router with the same connection settings — the carrier-customised Nokia would not hand the role over, so the Nokia stayed in charge and the ASUS went in through a LAN port as a wired access point: stronger WiFi where the student actually sits, and nothing extra for them to maintain.
看见问题后,修复本身只花了几分钟:死线拔出 WAN、活线插回 WAN,Nokia 立刻恢复,全屋设备同时上线。我们也试过把同学新买的华硕按同样的联网方式配成主路由——这台疑似定制的 Nokia 不肯交权,于是保留 Nokia 当主路由,华硕从 LAN 口接入、作有线副路由(AP):同学常待的位置 WiFi 更强,日常也不用多维护什么。
Result最终结果
Root cause: the live Opticomm line was in a LAN port while a dead nbn cable occupied the WAN port — the router never routed, so exactly one device could get online at a time. Two cables re-seated brought the whole flat back; the new ASUS now runs as a wired AP off the Nokia. Difficulty: three stars — most of it spent on the road and on a router with a single status light.
根因:Opticomm 活线插在 LAN 口,WAN 口里却是一根不通的 nbn 死线——路由器从未真正联网,所以每次只有一台设备能上。两根线各归其位,全屋恢复;新华硕现以有线 AP 方式挂在 Nokia 下。难度三星——时间大多花在路上、和那台“只有一颗灯”的路由器上。
