Activated on Aussie Broadband but No Internet: the Line Wasn’t Linked in the Building’s Comms Room — a Free NBN Visit Fixed It (Sydney)

A student in Sydney had just moved, activated an Aussie Broadband service, and had us install the router — but there was still no internet. The router’s DSL light flickered and the config was correct, yet nothing came through. After ruling out our own gear and a ~40-minute call with the provider, the answer was upstream: the line wasn’t connected through the building’s communications room to the room’s DSL port. An NBN technician fixed it the next morning in a few minutes — at no charge.

The router, the cable and the plan were all fine. The break was in the building — the room’s DSL port wasn’t connected through to the communications room, so no signal reached the router.

When the fault is in the building, not your room

Everything on the customer side checked out: the account was active, the router and cable were good, and the connection was configured correctly. A flickering DSL light that never goes solid, with no internet, often means the signal isn’t actually reaching the room. That’s an infrastructure problem — something only the network provider or NBN/Opticomm can fix, inside the building’s comms room.

So do this firstRule out your own gear (swap the router and cable, check the ports), have the ISP confirm it’s their side, then book — so the visit lands as a free infrastructure fix, not a paid call-out.
One practical note on cost: when the fault is genuinely in the network or building infrastructure, the NBN/Opticomm visit is free. But if the technician arrives and finds the problem was your own setup — a router not configured, a cable in the wrong port — you can be charged a call-out fee. So it pays to rule out your own gear first and have the provider confirm it’s their side before booking a visit.
Result

Root cause: the line wasn’t connected through the building’s communications room to the room’s DSL port — not the router, cable or plan. Once Aussie Broadband confirmed it was an infrastructure fault, the NBN technician fixed it free the next morning in minutes, and the connection came online.
