A connection that drops for thirty seconds and comes back is more maddening than one that's fully dead — and harder to get your ISP to take seriously. After hundreds of dropout jobs across Sydney, the causes below cover almost every case we see, ranked roughly by how often we find them. Work through the self-checks before paying anyone, including us.

An overheating or ageing modem/router. Hardware jammed in a sealed weak-current box cooks itself in summer, then reboots or drops sync. Self-check: touch it — if it's too hot to hold comfortably, ventilate it and watch for a week.

光猫/路由器过热或老化。塞在密闭弱电箱里的设备夏天把自己烤到重启或失步。自查:摸一下 — 烫得拿不住就先通风,观察一周。

WiFi interference masquerading as an NBN dropout. Your internet is fine — your WiFi is dropping. Self-check: when it happens, check whether a cabled device also loses internet. If cable survives, it's a WiFi problem, not NBN.

WiFi 干扰伪装成 NBN 掉线。网本身没断 — 是 WiFi 在掉。自查:掉线时看有线设备是否也断。有线没断,就是 WiFi 问题,不是 NBN。

A failing wall socket or in-wall cable run. Corroded joints and tired copper drop sync intermittently, especially in older Eastern Suburbs buildings. The ISP's remote tests almost never see this. Fixing it legally requires an ACMA-registered cabler — ours are partners we bring in.

Power problems feeding the equipment. Cheap multi-way power boards and failing plug packs cause micro-outages that look like line faults. Self-check: plug the modem directly into a wall outlet with its original adapter.

Provisioning or profile errors at the ISP. Wrong speed profile, a stuck session, an unstable line profile on FTTN — invisible from your side, fixable only by the ISP. This is where an independent test report forces action.

运营商配置或线路参数错误。错误的速率配置、卡住的会话、FTTN 上不稳定的线路参数 — 你这边看不见,只有 ISP 能改。这正是独立实测报告发挥作用的地方。

Congestion or a degraded line in the street. Evening-only slowdowns and drops, or dropouts every time it rains, point outside your walls. Rain-triggered faults are classic corroded-pit symptoms — document the pattern with timestamps.

街道侧拥塞或线路劣化。只在晚上变慢变断、或一下雨就掉线,问题多半在墙外。下雨就断是接线井氧化的经典症状 — 记下每次发生的时间作为证据。

A genuine NBN network fault. Least common, but real: failed street equipment, damaged lead-ins, area outages. Check your provider's outage page first; if it persists, this needs escalation with evidence, not more reboots.

真正的 NBN 网络故障。最少见但真实存在:街道设备故障、入户线损坏、区域断网。先查运营商的 outage 页面;持续发生就需要带证据上报,而不是继续重启。

The 10-minute self-check before you call anyone

打电话找人之前的 10 分钟自查

First, separate WiFi from line: during a dropout, check a cabled device or watch the modem's sync light. If the sync light stays solid while WiFi dies, your fix is on the WiFi side. Second, power-cycle once — properly: modem off 30 seconds, then on, then the router. Third, check your provider's outage page and app. Fourth, note the pattern: time of day, weather, what was running. That pattern is the single most useful thing you can tell any technician.

第一步,把 WiFi 和线路分开:掉线时看有线设备、或盯着光猫的同步灯。同步灯常亮而 WiFi 断了,问题就在 WiFi 侧。第二步,正确地断电重启一次:光猫断电 30 秒再开,然后开路由器。第三步,查运营商的 outage 页面和 App。第四步,记录规律:几点、什么天气、当时在跑什么。这个规律是你能告诉任何技师的最有用信息。

If the dropouts survive all four checks, you're past the reboot-it stage. The next step is measurement: line stats from the modem, sync history, and testing at the NBN connection point directly — which is where we come in, same-day across Sydney.

Time-locked dropouts point to congestion, a neighbour's device causing interference, or scheduled equipment behaviour — not random hardware failure. Log the exact times for a week; the pattern usually identifies the culprit.

Only if the router is actually the fault — which is true in a minority of cases. Diagnose first: if the modem loses sync, a new router changes nothing. That's the most common wasted $300 we see.
