You were online, then nothing. Before you spend an hour rebooting, this guide helps you tell in two minutes whether it's an outside fault or your own setup — and exactly what to do about rain, storms and fried boxes.

If your internet worked fine and then suddenly died, the odds strongly favour an upstream fault (your ISP or NBN) rather than your own gear. Before you spend an hour resetting things, check for an outage: look for an SMS or email from your provider about planned NBN maintenance, and search ‘NBN outage map’ for your area. A real example: a student in Zetland lost WiFi at midnight, saw an NBN outage/maintenance notice for 12am–5am, waited, and it came back — nothing at home needed fixing. If it's a known outage, you wait, or push your ISP to log a fault.

The box on your wall tells you where the fault is. Check it first:

‘It only plays up when it rains’ is a real thing — and how badly depends on how you're connected:
- ADSL/VDSL (phone line): most rain-sensitive. Ageing copper, poor sealing, water seeping into underground joints → signal attenuation and drop-outs.
- HFC (coax): the fibre backbone is fine, but the last-mile coax and outdoor connectors fear water; expect higher latency / instability. Rain also means more people home online.
- Fixed Wireless: heavy rain scatters the radio signal (‘rain fade’) — noticeable weakening in downpours.
- Satellite (Sky Muster): worst affected; heavy rain or thunderstorms can black it out entirely.
- FTTP (full fibre): essentially rain-proof — it's light in sealed, buried fibre, immune to water and EMI. The most stable choice.
- 4G/5G mobile: high-band (esp. 5G mmWave) is absorbed by raindrops, and towers get congested in bad weather.

Sydney storms can send a surge down the power or phone line and physically blow up an adapter or box. If you smell burning or see scorching:
- Safety first: don't touch it with bare hands — switch off the main breaker, then unplug.
- If it's the NBN box (NTD): it's NBN's property — don't bin it and don't buy a replacement from JB Hi-Fi (it's MAC-bound and won't work). Tell your provider it was ‘lightning damaged’ and they'll replace it free.
- If it's your own router: that one you replace yourself.
- Prevent it: a surge-protected power board (from Bunnings) helps against surges creeping in via the grid. In an extreme-storm forecast, the safest move is to unplug important gear before you leave.

Before assuming your gear is broken, confirm whether the whole area is down. Search ‘NBN outage map’ (or check your ISP's status/outage page and their app). Enter your address or suburb: if there's a listed outage or maintenance window, there is nothing to fix at home — note the estimated restore time and wait, or ask your ISP to log a fault so you're notified. This one check saves hours of pointless router-resetting.

The recovery checklist快速恢复清单
Put it together, in order:
- Check for a provider outage SMS/email and the NBN outage map.
- Read the box lights (above) to locate the fault.
- Power-cycle: unplug the box and router for 30–60 seconds, power the box first, wait for it to settle, then the router.
- If the lights say ‘line fault’ or you're mid-outage → log it with your ISP and wait; if the lights are healthy but there's no internet → suspect provisioning or router config.
- Still down after a reasonable wait? That's what we do — on-site or over video, day or night.

Usually not, if it was fine before. Check your provider for an outage SMS and the NBN outage map first, then read your box's lights. Only suspect your router/config if the line lights are healthy but there's still no internet.

Not from a shop. The NBN box (NTD) is NBN's property and is tied to your address, so a store-bought one won't work. Tell your ISP it was lightning-damaged and they'll replace it free. Only your own router is something you replace yourself.

Depends on your connection. Copper-based ADSL/VDSL and outdoor HFC/coax connectors are vulnerable to water; fixed-wireless and satellite suffer 'rain fade'. Full-fibre FTTP is essentially rain-proof. If rain reliably breaks your connection, upgrading to FTTP where available is the real fix.
