Apartments are usually a smaller area but come with their own quirks: older blocks near UNSW, USYD and UTS often run FTTB with 2–3 phone-style wall jacks where only one is actually wired live, and newer towers usually have modern fibre but sometimes building-managed networks that need specific setup steps.

A UTS postgraduate's 1-bedroom apartment near the City on a new Origin Energy 100Mbps FTTB plan was fully activated, tested and wired to his desktop in under 30 minutes — the building's internal wiring was in good shape. Separately, an old red-brick apartment block in Camperdown had 2–3 phone jacks around the unit, and only one was the live “master” port — we found it with a proper line tester rather than guessing.

In a typical 1–2 bedroom apartment, a single well-placed router is usually enough — the trick is finding the live jack and the best position, not buying more hardware. For share houses with 4+ people, we usually recommend upgrading to a router that handles more simultaneous devices rather than a full Mesh system.
