Warehouse WiFi, from the loading dock to the upstairs office
Big floors, steel racking, roller doors and a mezzanine office make warehouses hard places for WiFi, and many leased ones have no working internet on day one. We arrange the connection, plan coverage across the whole space and can put security cameras on the same network.
What makes warehouse WiFi coverage difficult
Range is rarely the problem on paper. In a real warehouse, it is what sits between the access point and the device.
Steel and racking
Metal roofs, racking and stacked stock absorb and reflect signal, so coverage is planned around the layout, not the floor area alone.
High ceilings
Mounting points are high and far apart. We choose positions that can be reached safely and still cover the floor.
Offices on another level
Upstairs and mezzanine offices usually need their own nodes, linked back without long new cable runs.
No line on day one
Many leased warehouses have no active service. We check what the address can get and coordinate the line with the provider.
Our warehouse network setup
We walk the site first and plan around where people work, scan and sit, not just the floor plan.
- Walk the site firstFloor, racking, mezzanine, loading docks and the spots where people actually work or scan.
- Upload planned firstFile transfers, video calls and cameras all share upload, so the service is chosen for it.
- Mesh or cabled access pointsMesh with wireless backhaul keeps cabling minimal. Cabled access points suit very large or busy sites.
- Separate networksStaff, guests, scanners and printers, and cameras each on their own network.
- Fine-tuned after move-inOnce stock, desks and people are in, coverage is re-checked and positions adjusted, as agreed in your plan.
Warehouse security cameras on the same network
Cameras for doors, loading docks and stock areas can be installed in the same visit as the WiFi. They sit on their own part of the network with PoE ports reserved, so one team looks after both.
- Doors, loading docks and stock areas
- Cameras on their own VLAN
- Installed in the same visit as the WiFi
How much WiFi does your warehouse need?
Set to a warehouse like our recent case: 60 people across 5,000㎡. Change the numbers to match your site, or add security cameras to see what the camera network adds.
Estimated equipment
Network requirements
Planning estimate only, not a quote. Assumes 1.5–2 devices per working person (about 1 for public events), about 50 devices per access point, roughly 900㎡ per access point on open floors (our 5,000㎡ warehouse used six), and typical per-person bandwidth for calls, browsing and uploads. Walls, steel, outdoor areas and what the venue can get change the design.
Warehouse WiFi case: 5,000㎡ covered in four days
A client took on a 5,000㎡ warehouse with upstairs offices for a three-month project. More than 50 people were about to move in, and the building had no working internet.
Single speed-test snapshot on a 2000/500 service. Full WiFi signal at every spot we tested across the warehouse floor and upstairs offices.
Enquiry: 50+ users, around three months, online before move-in.
Site walk-through. Plan and quote sent the same day.
2000/500 Mbps fibre service activated.
Six nodes installed and tested. Return visit booked after move-in to fine-tune coverage.
Warehouse WiFi pricing: quoted per site
Size, structure and what the address can get all change the design, so we quote after a walk-through or floor-plan review. One written quote covers the connection, equipment, installation, support and pack-down or handover.
Warehouse WiFi FAQ
How many access points does a warehouse need?+
It depends on the layout more than the floor area. As a starting point, open floors need roughly one access point per 900㎡, and racking, steel and upstairs offices add more. Our 5,000㎡ warehouse with upstairs offices used six mesh nodes.
Can you cover the upstairs or mezzanine office too?+
Yes. Offices on another level usually get their own nodes, linked back wirelessly or with a short cable run, so the whole site is one network.
Do you need to run cables through the warehouse?+
Not always. Mesh nodes with wireless backhaul keep cabling to a minimum. For very large or busy sites, or when cameras are added, we use cabled access points, run by our partnered ACMA-registered cablers.
Can you install security cameras at the same time?+
Yes. Network and CCTV can be done together: cameras go on their own part of the network and are installed in the same visit as the WiFi.
Will scanners and handheld devices work across the floor?+
That is what the coverage plan is for. Tell us where scanning happens and which devices you use, and we test those areas before handover.
The warehouse has no internet. How fast can it be connected?+
It depends on what the address can get and the provider's activation date. In our recent case the fibre service was active on day three and the WiFi was working on day four, but contact us as early as you can.
