The customer had just upgraded from FTTB to full-fibre FTTP with Optus — objectively a better connection. Yet the moment the upgrade went live, the home's multi-AP UniFi wireless system stopped working entirely, leaving the whole house without usable WiFi.
The FTTP service itself had activated successfully, and Optus had supplied a new router as part of the upgrade. The failure was a chain of three separate issues stacked on top of each other:
- The new Optus router's settings hadn't been adjusted for the upgraded service, so the router itself couldn't get online.
- The physical cabling had been reconnected incorrectly during the changeover, cutting the UniFi APs off from the network.
- Even after the APs were reachable again, speed tests stayed well below what the line could do — the UniFi wireless config had the channel width set far too low, throttling wireless throughput across the house.
An NBN technology upgrade (FTTB/FTTN/HFC to FTTP) changes how your home connects — but it doesn't reconfigure your own equipment. If you run anything beyond the ISP's router (UniFi, mesh, managed switches), budget for a proper reconfiguration after the upgrade, or a faster line can paradoxically leave you with slower — or zero — WiFi.
Result
FTTP online, all UniFi APs adopted and green, full-speed wireless with seamless roaming across the house.
