In a four-person share house in Kingsford on an HFC 105M plan (Netcomm router), one student’s room sat three walls away from the main router, and games like League of Legends and Steam titles were unplayable at night — high ping, packet loss, constant lag. A straight cable run would have been ideal, but the on-hand 10m cable couldn’t reach through the house’s odd layout. A wireless repeater plus a short LAN run to the PC got in-game ping stable under 20 ms.

The plan (105M HFC) and the router were both fine — the whole problem was the wireless path across three walls. The cleanest fix is always a cable straight to the router, but this house’s layout was unusual (rooms 1 and 2 weren’t even internally connected) and the 10m cable on hand wasn’t long enough. So we shortened the wireless hop instead.
- Placed a wireless repeater closer to the gaming room, giving the PC a stronger nearby signal.
- Ran a short LAN cable from the repeater into the desktop, so the last leg was wired.
- Tested during an actual LOL game — ping held stable under 20 ms.
- Asked the student to observe for a few days; that night they reported no more stutter.

For gaming, wired is king, but when a full cable run isn’t practical, moving the signal source closer and wiring only the final short leg gets you most of the way there. The goal is a steady, low-latency last hop to the device that actually needs it.
