- OK backup: HFC (coax) — can do high speeds, generally fine for gaming.
- Avoid if you can: FTTB / FTTN / FTTC (phone-line based) — lower ceiling and more variability.
This one check, done before you sign, prevents the most expensive gaming mistake: a great plan on a bad line you can't change without moving.

- Geek: 1000M if you want maximum headroom.

A 10-year-old router on a 1000M plan may not even hit 100M, and old hardware adds latency and drops under load. Get a modern WiFi 6 (or 6E/7) router with gigabit ports; ASUS is a gaming favourite, TP-Link is the reliable workhorse. For a big or two-storey home, use mesh. For serious gaming, plug in with Ethernet — a wired connection beats WiFi for latency and stability every time. Use Cat6 (or Cat6a) cable; Cat5e is the minimum, and old Cat5 caps you at 100M. If you can't run a cable to your room, a wired mesh backhaul or a quality 5GHz/WiFi 6 link is the next best thing.

- Consider QoS/gaming-mode on the router to prioritise game traffic.
