Telstra DSL Router With Every Front Light Off in Sydney CBD (Chinatown): the Router Was Dead, Not the Line

Student · Sydney CBD / ChinatownTelstra DSL25 Mbps planAll front lights offReplaced with TP-LinkLine back the same visit

A student living near Chinatown in Sydney CBD had lost internet completely. The Telstra-supplied router on their DSL (phone line) service showed no front panel lights at all — only a faint glow at the back — and repeated power cycles changed nothing. The line was fine; the router hardware had failed. We put our own TP-Link router on the same wall socket, restarted the modem side from the Telstra app, waited for the DSL light to go solid, and rebuilt the WiFi.

The give-away was the front panel: no power, no DSL, no WiFi light at all, with only a faint glow at the back of the unit. A line fault normally still leaves the router lit up with a DSL light that flashes or sits red. Nothing lit at the front points at the router hardware itself.

What we did on site

How we isolated it on-site
1
Power cycled the supplied Telstra router several times, on different outlets
front panel stayed dark
2
Checked the back of the unit - only a faint glow, no normal boot sequence
hardware call: dead
3
Connected our own TP-Link router to the same DSL wall socket
same line, different box
4
Restarted the modem side from the Telstra app while the new router synced
DSL light flashing
5
Waited for the DSL light to go from flashing to solid, then tested
line back up
6
Set the WiFi name and password back up and reconnected their devices
25 Mbps plan restored
This was an older Telstra DSL service running over the phone line on a 25 Mbps plan. That is worth knowing because it changes what a normal repair looks like: the DSL sync light is the single most useful indicator on the box.

Dead router or just needs a restart? How to tell before you call anyone

Dead unit vs needs a restart
Router hardware has failedLine or session problem
Front lightsNothing lights up, even after several power cyclesPower light normal, DSL or internet light flashing or red
Power cycleNo change on any outletOften recovers, or at least changes the light pattern
WiFi nameNetwork stops broadcasting entirelyWiFi still visible, but no internet through it
What fixes itReplace the router, then re-sync and set up WiFi againRestart the modem side, check cabling, or contact the provider
If your router goes completely dark, the sequence below saves a lot of time before anyone comes out.
Result

Root cause: the Telstra-supplied router had failed outright - no front panel lights after repeated power cycles, not a DSL line fault. A replacement TP-Link router on the same socket synced and the 25 Mbps service came back in the same visit, WiFi name and password rebuilt before we left.
