Telstra Router Would Not Save a New WiFi Name or Password: Fixed with a Second Router as Wired AP (Waterloo)

Student · WaterlooTelstra · DSLTelstra-supplied routerWiFi name change not savingSecond router as wired APFixed same visit

A first for us: a case where the only problem was that a WiFi name and password refused to change. A student in Waterloo, on a Telstra DSL (phone-line) connection with a Telstra-supplied router, reported that changing the WiFi name and password simply did not work. The admin page said saved — and nothing changed.

How we isolated it on-site
1
Changed the WiFi name in the admin page, hit save
Page said saved · router lights unchanged
2
Tried hiding the SSID in software instead
Old WiFi name still visible
3
Full power-cycle and reset, then tried again
Still not applied
4
Concluded the Telstra router itself was at fault · offered 2 options
Replace it, or add a second router
5
Configured the student’s own router as a wired AP
New WiFi name and password live

What we tried before calling it a hardware fault

The rule is to rule out software before blaming hardware, one change at a time.At that point the Telstra router itself was the most likely culprit, so we laid out two honest options rather than forcing one.

Two options, one chosen

Option 1 vs option 2 · what we weighed
Option 1 · replace the routerOption 2 · second router as AP
HowReport the fault to Telstra and try a replacement unitKeep the Telstra unit as main router, switch its WiFi off with the physical button, wire the student’s own router behind it as the WiFi access point
When it worksOnly after a new unit arrives and is set upSame visit, on the spot
OutcomeUncertain — depends on the replacement unitChosen by the student — WiFi name and password exactly as they wanted
The student wanted their chosen WiFi name working that day, so option 2 won: the faulty Telstra unit stayed as the main router with its WiFi turned off by the physical button, and their own spare router was wired behind it as a second access point broadcasting exactly the name and password they wanted. Configured and confirmed on the spot.

What we have seen across cases

Result

Root cause: a faulty Telstra-supplied router that ignored WiFi changes even after resets. Instead of waiting on a replacement, we wired the student’s own router behind it as a second access point — their chosen WiFi name and password, live the same visit.
