Two things made this job unusual, and neither of them was the fault itself. The router was a brand and model I had not come across on a job before, with an interface nothing like the ASUS and TP-Link units I see every week. And the plan was 25 Mbps — the slowest download speed I have been called out to in Sydney, on a fibre service, and not a bargain for what it delivers.

The situation

The student had activated the broadband and then hit a wall at the router.

Location: Auburn. Provider: Occom. Plan: 25 Mbps download — their entry-level tier.
Router: AmpliFi. Physically and visually nothing like the ASUS or TP-Link units that turn up on most jobs.
The reported problem was simply that after the broadband was activated, the router interface could not be worked out, so no further configuration was possible.
Handled as remote video guidance rather than an on-site visit.

Four things that made it harder than it looks

四个让它比看起来更难的地方

I had not configured this brand and model before, and its setup path is not the same as a conventional router.
There was no computer nearby that could be plugged straight into a LAN port, which removes the usual fallback.
Remote video guidance is slower and less direct than standing in the room — every check has to be described and then performed by someone else.
From what I could find on the model, this router should have had two accompanying mesh units. They were not on site, and I could not rule out that their absence would affect bringing it online.

The service was already activated and the physical side was fine. The only thing standing between the student and a working connection was that the router had never been told how to connect — and the usual way of telling it, a web admin page, did not exist on this model.服务其实已经开通、物理线路也没问题。挡在中间的只有一件事：路由器从来没有被告知该怎么联网——而平时告知它的那个途径，也就是网页后台，在这款设备上根本不存在。

If you end up with a router whose interface you have never seen, the approach is the same every time.

Reset it first. A first-run device tells you what it wants; a half-configured one does not.
Install the manufacturer's own app if the device asks for one, rather than looking for a web page that may not exist.
Whatever the interface looks like, the two things that must be correct are the connection type and the account details your provider issued.
Finish with a speed test. If the result matches the plan you are paying for, the setup is genuinely done rather than merely showing a green light.

如果你手上这台路由器的界面你从没见过，处理思路每次都是一样的。

先重置。刚出厂状态的设备会告诉你它需要什么，配了一半的设备不会。
设备要求装厂商官方APP就装，不要去找一个可能根本不存在的网页后台。
不管界面长什么样，必须正确的只有两件事：联网方式，以及运营商给你的宽带账号信息。
最后一定要测速。测出来的数字和你在付费的套餐对得上，才算真的配好了，而不只是亮了个绿灯。

Result最终结果

Root cause: the router had never been configured for the service, and this AmpliFi has no conventional web admin page to configure it from. We reset the unit, followed its prompt to install the official app, set the connection type to PPPoE in the app and entered the broadband account details the student had been issued. The app reported the connection as up, and an on-site speed test matched the 25 Mbps plan — the absent mesh units turned out not to block the main unit from working on its own.

根因是路由器从来没有针对这条宽带做过配置，而这台AmpliFi没有常规的网页后台可供配置。我们把路由器重置，按提示引导下载了官方APP，在APP上把联网方式设置为PPPoE，并输入该同学开通的宽带账号信息。APP提示联网成功，现场测速与25兆套餐一致——事实证明，缺少那两个配套Mesh设备并不影响主路由单独工作。
