This one arrived as a message rather than a job: “I renamed the WiFi, it says it worked, and nothing changed.” It is the kind of problem people assume they have caused themselves, so they repeat the same steps four or five times before asking anyone. In this case the steps were right the first time. The router was not doing what its own admin page said it was doing — and while that argument played out, the network everyone could actually see had no password on it.

The settings were saved. What never happened was the router pushing them out to its own wireless. Normally you can watch that happen: you press save, the WiFi indicator goes out, and a few seconds later it comes back on with the new network live. Here the admin page held the new name even across a power cycle, while the air carried the old one — and the old one was still open, with no password. Settings stored in one place and never applied in another is a software fault, not a mistake by the person typing.设置其实是保存下来了。没有发生的，是路由器把这些设置真正下发到自己的无线部分。正常情况下这一步是看得见的：点保存，WiFi 指示灯熄灭，几秒后重新亮起，新网络随即生效。而这台机器断电重启之后，后台依然显示新名称，空气里广播的却还是旧的——而且旧的那个还是开放的、没有密码。设置存在一处、却从未在另一处生效，这是软件层面的故障，不是操作的人打错了字。

Root cause: the router stored the new network name but never applied it to its own wireless, so the admin page and the broadcast network disagreed — and a power cycle did not resolve the split in either direction, which ruled out a mistake in his steps. Meanwhile the network everyone could still see was open, with no password. A manual factory reset followed by reconnecting and setting the name again from clean applied the change, and he confirmed it worked. The second time we have seen this behaviour on this router model, on a unit that was only days old.
