You can buy a router, cables and accessories the same day at plenty of physical stores across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and most cities. Each type of shop has its strengths:

Tip: whichever you pick, tell staff your NBN connection type (or ask them to recommend) so the device is compatible — and grab the matching cables/adapters in the same trip.

Fastest way: open Google Maps and search ‘JB Hi-Fi near me’, ‘Officeworks near me’ or ‘electronics store near me’. It shows the closest branches, opening hours, and how busy they are right now. A few pointers:

• Most JB Hi-Fi and Officeworks branches sit in or near shopping centres and CBD strips — there's usually one within a short bus/train ride in Sydney's inner suburbs.
• Check opening hours before you go (some close early on weekends).
• Use the store's website stock checker to confirm your model is in stock at that branch before travelling.
• In a hurry? Many stores offer click & collect — order online, pick up in ~30 minutes.
• Near a university? UNSW (Kingsford/Kensington), USYD and UTS all have electronics stores within easy reach — ask us if you want the closest one to your suburb.

A router that's wrong for your setup wastes money and speed. Match it to four things:

• 1. Your connection type (most important): FTTP/HFC → any decent gigabit router; FTTN/FTTB (phone line) → a modem-router that supports VDSL2. Buy the wrong category and it simply won't connect. See modem vs router.
• 2. Your plan speed: on 1000M you want gigabit (or 2.5G) WAN/LAN ports and a capable CPU; a cheap old router can bottleneck a fast plan to a fraction of it.
• 3. Your home size / coverage: a studio or 1-bed is fine on a single router; a large or two-storey home usually needs mesh (see below).
• 4. WiFi standard: WiFi 5 (ac) is the budget floor; WiFi 6 is the sweet spot in 2026 for value and multi-device homes; WiFi 6E/7 are for high-end setups and newest phones. Buying WiFi 6 future-proofs you without overpaying.

Rough budget guide: entry WiFi 6 routers cover a small flat; mid-range covers a share house; premium/mesh covers a big house or heavy gaming. Don't buy more than your plan and devices can use.

A ‘universal’ router just means an unlocked, off-the-shelf router (TP-Link, ASUS, etc.) that isn't tied to any one ISP — you can take it between providers and set it up yourself with the connection details in your activation email. This is what you usually want. Avoid a router that's carrier-locked to a specific ISP (some supplied units are), because it can be a pain to reuse if you switch. The only compatibility rule is the connection type: a universal router works on FTTP/HFC out of the box; for FTTN/FTTB make sure the ‘universal’ unit is specifically a VDSL2 modem-router.

One router broadcasts from one spot; a mesh system uses two or more units that blanket a home in seamless WiFi. Rule of thumb:

• Single router: studio, 1-bed, or a small apartment where every room is close to the router.
• Mesh (2–3 nodes): two-storey homes, long floorplans, thick brick/concrete walls, or dead spots in a back bedroom. Mesh keeps one WiFi name as you move around, unlike a cheap extender that halves speed and makes you switch networks.
• Avoid basic ‘repeaters’ for anything serious — they often cut throughput. Wired backhaul (an Ethernet run between mesh nodes) is best if you can manage it.

The router is only half of it — the right accessories matter:

• Ethernet cable: use Cat6 (or Cat6a) for gigabit and future-proofing; Cat5e is the minimum. Old Cat5 caps at 100M. Buy the length you need — Bunnings sells it by the metre.
• Phone/DSL cable (RJ11): only needed for FTTN/FTTB to reach the phone socket.
• Adapters: a plug adapter if your device is from overseas, and any RJ45 couplers/wall plates for tidy runs.
• Power supply: make sure any imported router has an AU-compatible plug/voltage (most are 100–240V, just need the plug).
• WiFi extender / booster: a cheap way to cover one stubborn dead spot (though mesh is better for whole-home).
• Surge-protected power board: from Bunnings — cheap insurance against storm surges frying your gear.

• Don't buy a replacement NBN box (NTD) from a shop — it's NBN's property, tied to your address, so a store-bought one won't work. If yours is damaged, your ISP replaces it.
• Don't buy a router-only device for a DSL (FTTN/FTTB) home — you need a VDSL modem-router.
• Don't overpay for 2000M-class gear if you're on 100M — match the router to your plan and devices.
• Check the WiFi standard matches your devices — a WiFi 6E/7 router gives no benefit if your laptop and phone are older.
• Avoid a carrier-locked unit if you might switch providers.
