Same-day broadband is not a trick, it is arithmetic: an FTTP address with working fibre already at the wall can be activated in hours, so the only real question is whether the physical side of the flat is intact. Nobody checks that before promising. When we opened this comms cupboard at seven in the evening, the answer was very nearly no.

The Huawei ONT had been pulled clean off the wall, and everything that had been connected to it — power, network cabling, and the fibre lead — was lying loose on the floor of the cupboard.
It is worth being precise about which of those matters. Power leads and network cables are replaceable and forgiving; you can buy them, and pulling one out does no lasting harm. The fibre lead is neither. It is a thin glass strand in a jacket, and it has a minimum bend radius the way a wine glass has a maximum drop height. Yanked out of a wall and left in a heap under other cables, it is entirely capable of having failed already, invisibly, with the jacket still looking fine.
That is the whole reason this scene was alarming rather than merely untidy.

The two links we could not have fixed on the night are the two that were damaged. A fibre pigtail is glass: bend it too far and it breaks, and a broken one has to be re-spliced by the provider's technician on their schedule, not ours. Everything else in this chain was under our control. This is why the few seconds after powering the ONT back up were the tense part of the evening.那天晚上我们唯一修不了的两环，恰好就是被弄坏的两环。光纤尾纤本质上是玻璃：折得太狠就断，断了只能等运营商的人上门重新熔接，时间由他们定，不由我们定。这条链路上别的环节都在我们能力范围之内。所以给光猫重新通上电之后的那几十秒，才是那个晚上最紧张的部分。
Why we checked before we cleaned up
为什么先检查、后收拾
The instinct in a cupboard like that is to start tidying. We did the opposite first, because tidying is exactly the activity most likely to break a fibre lead that has so far survived.
So the fibre came out from under the pile on its own terms, was inspected along its length, and only then did the rest of the cabling get re-dressed around it. The connector was cleaned before it went back into the ONT — an end face that has been sitting on a floor collects dust, and dust on a fibre connector attenuates the signal or blocks it entirely, which produces a fault that looks exactly like a broken line while being trivially fixable.
Then the ONT went back on, and we waited for the PON indicator. Green. The line was intact, the same-day promise was still alive, and the rest of the evening was ordinary work.
面对那样一个弱电箱，本能反应是先动手收拾。我们先做的恰恰相反，因为「收拾」正是最容易把一根侥幸还活着的光纤弄断的动作。
所以我们先把那根光纤单独从线堆里请出来，沿着整条看过一遍，之后才围着它把其余的线重新理顺。接头在插回光猫之前先做了清理——在地上躺过的端面会沾灰，而光纤接头上的灰会衰减信号甚至完全挡住，造成的故障看起来和线路断了一模一样，实际上却是随手就能解决的。
然后把光猫装回去、通电，等 PON 指示灯。绿的。线路没断，「当天用网」这个承诺还站得住，那天晚上剩下的部分就是常规工作了。

How a same-day connection is actually arranged
「当天开通」到底是怎么安排出来的
There is no shortcut being taken here, and it is worth explaining because people assume there must be one.
An FTTP address where the fibre is already installed does not need anyone to attend to bring the service up — activation is a provisioning step, and it can complete in hours rather than days. What makes it look impossible is the ordering: most people move in, then start looking for a provider, then wait, and the clock only starts when they finally submit. Here the application went in ahead of time and was timed against the move, so activation and the install landed on the same evening by design.
The part nobody can arrange in advance is the state of the flat. That is the variable, and in this one it was the variable that almost ended it.

- If you want internet on move-in day, submit the application before you move, not after. The waiting is almost entirely queue time you created.
- Open the comms cupboard on the day you get the keys and photograph it. If something is missing or torn out, you want to know then, not at 7 pm on the day you need it.
- Treat the fibre lead as the fragile item it is. Do not pull it, do not coil it tightly, and do not bury it under other cables.
- Inspect before you tidy. Tidying a heap of cables is when a surviving fibre usually breaks.
- A dusty connector produces the same symptom as a dead line. Clean the end face before you decide the line is broken.
- Missing power leads and network cables are an inconvenience. A snapped fibre is a schedule problem, because only the provider can re-splice it.
- 想在搬家当天就有网，就在搬之前把申请递进去，别等搬完再说。那段等待里绝大部分是你自己制造出来的排队时间。
- 拿到钥匙那天就打开弱电箱拍张照。缺东西或者被拆过，你要在那时候知道，而不是在等着用网的那天晚上七点才知道。
- 把光纤尾纤当成易碎品对待。别拽它、别盘得太紧、别把它压在别的线底下。
- 先检查再收拾。一根侥幸还活着的光纤，通常就是在整理线堆的时候断的。
- 脏了的接头和断掉的线路，症状是一样的。在断定线路坏了之前，先把端面清理干净。
- 缺电源线、缺网线只是麻烦；光纤断了是排期问题——因为只有运营商能来重新熔接。
Result最终结果
The fibre lead had survived being torn out and left on the floor: after the cabling was re-dressed and the cleaned connector went back into the Huawei ONT, the PON indicator came up green, confirming the line to the premises was intact. The Superloop FTTP service activated the same day it was applied for, the router was configured that evening, and the flat went from empty comms cupboard to working connection in a single visit that started at 7 pm.
