What the NBN actually isNBN 到底是什么
The NBN (National Broadband Network) is Australia's wholesale network — the company that builds and maintains the fibre and lines. It does not sell to you directly; you buy a plan from a retail provider (an ISP such as Telstra, Superloop or Aussie Broadband) that runs over the NBN. Think of NBN as the road, and ISPs as the delivery companies that use it. This split is the single biggest difference from broadband back home — more on that in Australia vs China broadband.

Your building is wired for one NBN connection type, and it sets your speed ceiling and what box you'll have:

Not every home has the big white box不是每家都有那个大白盒
Before you tear the place apart looking for it: if your wall only has a small phone-line socket (like an old telephone jack), you're probably on FTTB/FTTN — there's no big NBN box; you just plug a VDSL-compatible modem-router into that socket. If you're on FTTP/HFC you'll have a box (an NTD, or ONT on Opticomm) — it's just usually well hidden.

Where developers love to hide the box开发商最爱把盒子藏在哪
After hundreds of jobs, here's the usual line-up of hiding spots:
- Top of a tall cupboard above the fridge (very common in new apartments — you'll be standing on a chair to see the lights).
- The back of a bedroom wardrobe, buried behind your coats.
- The weak-current metal box by the entry / shoe cabinet — cramped, cables everywhere, and hot in summer.
- A cold garage corner by the meter box (for houses) — often behind cobwebs.
- Bolted to a wall near the living-room TV (common on HFC) — easy to unplug by accident when you move the TV or vacuum.

Reading the box lights看懂盒子的灯
Once you've found it, the lights tell you if it's healthy. On an FTTP NTD, a solid PON light and an active UNI-D/LAN light mean the line is up. A red LOS light means no optical signal (check the thin fibre lead, then call your ISP). On FTTN, watch the DSL light — solid is good, off/flashing forever means no sync. NBN builds and maintains the network (the lines/fibre) but doesn't sell to you. Your ISP (Telstra, Superloop, etc.) sells you the plan, bills you and does support, using the NBN. That's why an ISP sometimes says a line fault 'isn't their problem' — they have to log it with NBN.

Check above the fridge, the back of a wardrobe, the weak-current box by the front door, a garage corner (houses), or near the living-room TV. If your wall only has a small phone socket, you may not have a box at all — that's FTTB/FTTN, where a VDSL modem-router plugs into the phone socket.
