The messages arrive from different continents and describe the same thing. A student in France or the Netherlands says the accommodation WiFi will not hold up for everyday use; students in Sydney say it is fine for browsing but spikes and lags the moment they play. It is worth saying plainly why this happens: with shared building WiFi you do not control the one thing that matters most — how far you are from the access point, and how many people are sharing it. You cannot fix that from inside your room. What you can do is stop relying on it, and there are exactly three ways to do that.

In almost every one of these messages the building's own connection is not the problem. The loss happens in the last few metres: a corridor access point shared by everyone on your floor, with your walls in between. That is why a speed test can look acceptable and a game still feels terrible — shared wireless degrades in stability and latency long before it degrades in raw throughput. Shared student accommodation WiFi fails in the last few metres: a corridor access point shared by the whole floor, with your walls in between, which is why gaming spikes and lags while a speed test still looks acceptable. There are three ways out, worth trying in order — check whether your exact address can take its own connection, test whether the wall Ethernet port is live and wire into it (adding your own router behind it if you want good WiFi too), and failing both, repeat the building WiFi with a router that supports repeater mode. In one Sydney dorm we deployed that third option on an ASUS router, and the student reported the experience improved.
