Almost everything about this job had already been done by somebody else. The plan was active, the line had been upgraded, the socket that worked had been identified. What nobody had done was the last twenty minutes of work that turns all of that into internet — and when we sat down to do it, the router the customer had just bought turned out to be the only thing in the flat we could not get into.
这一单里,几乎每件事都已经有人替客户做过了:套餐是开通的,线路是升级过的,哪个口能用也有人指出来了。没有人做的,是把这一切变成「有网」的最后二十分钟——而当我们坐下来做这二十分钟的时候,客户刚买的那台路由器,成了整套房子里唯一一个我们进不去的东西。

The request that came in over chat described two things at once: a Superloop connection that needed to be brought up, and a speed problem. Those usually turn out to be one problem wearing two hats, and on arrival that is roughly what it was — but not in the shape the messages had suggested. This is normal. What a customer can see and describe is the symptom; the layout that produces it only becomes visible when you are standing in the room. The first useful thing we did here was throw away the remote picture and rebuild it from what was actually in front of us.
What was actually there: the flat had been running on a router with a phone SIM in it, which is a legitimate way to be online and a poor way to stay online, because it generally tests in the tens of Mbps. Separately, the customer had taken out a Superloop plan, and OptiComm had already been out to upgrade the premises away from the old DSL wiring. That crew had done their part and told the customer which socket the service now landed on. They do not configure routers, so that is where it stopped.
线上发过来的需求同时说了两件事:一个是 Superloop 的网络要开通,另一个是网速要提升。这两件事往往其实是同一个问题的两个说法,到现场后大致也是如此——但形状和聊天里描述的并不一样。这很正常。客户能看见、能描述的是症状;产生这个症状的结构,只有人站在房间里才看得出来。所以这一单第一件有用的事,是把线上那张图先扔掉,按眼前的实际情况重新拼一遍。
现场实际的情况是:这套房子一直靠一台插着电话卡的路由器上网。这是一种可以接受的临时上网方式,但不是一种可以长期依赖的方式,因为它通常只能测到几十兆。另一边,客户已经开通了 Superloop 的套餐,OptiComm 也已经上门,把这个住址从原来的 DSL 线路升级掉了。那批人做完了自己那部分,并告诉客户服务现在落在哪个口上。他们不负责配置路由器,所以事情就停在了这里。

An upgrade order and a working line are not a connection. An infrastructure crew is contracted to make the physical path good and to tell you which socket it now lands on; configuring a router is explicitly outside that, and it is not something the retail provider sends anyone out to do either. The gap is small measured in hours and total measured in outcome: this customer had paid for a 250 Mbps service that had been correctly delivered to the wall, and could not use a byte of it.升级工单做完、线路是通的,这些都还不等于「有网」。基建方的合同范围是把物理链路做好、告诉你它现在落在哪个口上;配置路由器明确不在里面,运营商那边也不会为这一步派人上门。这个缺口按工时算很小,按结果算就是全部:客户付了钱的 250 兆服务已经正确送到墙上,而他一个字节都用不了。
Step one is proving the socket is live — with a router you already trust

There were two unknowns in this flat at the same time: whether the upgraded socket really carried a service, and whether the customer's equipment worked. Testing both at once is how people lose an evening. If you plug an untested router into an untested socket and nothing happens, you have learned nothing at all.
So the first thing through the socket was a router we knew was good. It came up, which settled the line question permanently: the upgrade had been done properly, the socket the crew named was the right one, and nothing further up the chain needed investigating. Every problem discovered after that point was, by definition, on the customer's side of the wall — which is exactly where the next one was.
这套房子里同时存在两个未知数:升级过的那个口到底有没有服务,以及客户自己的设备能不能用。把这两个未知数放在一起测,是很多人一晚上白忙的原因。用一台没验证过的路由器去插一个没验证过的口,结果没反应——你其实什么都没查出来。
所以第一个插进这个口的,是一台我们确定能用的路由器。它起来了,线路这个问题就永久地定下来了:升级是做到位的,那批人说的那个口是对的,墙那一侧再往上都不需要查。从这一刻开始发现的任何问题,按定义都在墙的客户这一侧——而下一个问题恰好就在那里。

The router that rejected its own password
那台拒绝了自己密码的路由器
The customer had bought a new D-Link for this. To configure any router you first log in to its admin page, and the username and password for that are printed on a label on the base of the unit. Those were entered exactly as printed and came back as an error. That is not, on its own, alarming — labels get read wrong, characters get confused, and there is a standard answer for it: hold the reset button, put the unit back to factory state, and the credentials on the label become correct by definition, because a factory reset is what makes them true.
It was reset, and they were still rejected. In over a hundred jobs this was the first time we had seen it, and there is no clean diagnosis to offer: the most likely explanation is simply that the unit shipped with the wrong label on it, so the printed credentials never matched the ones inside. It is not worth an evening either way. A router you cannot log in to is a router you cannot configure, and a brand-new unit in that state is a warranty matter, not a repair. We advised the customer to return it for a refund and moved on with hardware that worked: the landlord's TP-Link was already in the flat and took the configuration without complaint, and we left a spare TP-Link of ours there as well so the customer was not left depending on a single borrowed unit.
The practical lesson is about sequencing rather than brands. Log in to a new router and change its admin password before you need it under pressure — at the kitchen table on a quiet evening, not at the point where it is the last thing standing between a flat and its internet. If the label credentials are going to fail, it is much better to find that out while the shop's return window is the only thing at stake.
客户为这次开通新买了一台 D-Link。要配置任何一台路由器,第一步都是登录它的管理后台,而后台的用户名和密码就印在机器底部的标签上。这两项按标签原样输入,提示错误。这本身还不算稀奇——标签会看错,字符会混淆,而且有一个标准答案:长按 reset,把机器恢复成出厂状态,标签上的信息就一定是对的,因为恢复出厂本来就是让它变对的那个动作。
但恢复出厂之后,还是被拒绝。这在上百单里是第一次遇到,也给不出一个干净的诊断:最可能的解释就是这台机器出厂时贴错了标签,印在上面的信息从一开始就和机器里的对不上。不过无论是哪种原因,都不值得为它耗一个晚上。登不进去的路由器就是配不了的路由器,而一台全新的机器出现这种情况,那是保修问题,不是维修问题。我们建议客户直接申请退款,然后换用能用的硬件继续:房东那台 TP-Link 本来就在房子里,配置起来没有任何阻碍;我们另外把带过去的一台 TP-Link 也留了下来,免得客户之后只能依赖一台借来的设备。
这里真正能带走的经验和牌子无关,和顺序有关:新路由器买回来,先登进后台、把管理密码改掉,别等到你急着用它的时候才第一次登录——最好是某个安静的晚上在餐桌上做完,而不是在它已经是这套房子和网络之间最后一道关卡的时候。如果标签信息注定要出问题,那么在「唯一代价只是退货窗口」的时候发现,要好得多。

With the TP-Link configured, the connection came up and tested at the speed of the plan. Worth putting the three numbers side by side, because they describe why this job was worth doing at all: the SIM router the flat had been living on ran in the tens of Mbps; the old DSL wiring, before OptiComm came out, topped out around a hundred; the upgraded line on the Superloop plan delivered its rated speed the same afternoon it was finally set up.
One last decision, which is a judgement call rather than a rule: this is a 1b1b apartment, so the whole flat is within a few metres of the router. In that footprint there is no coverage problem to solve and no benefit in splitting the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands into two separate network names — it just gives the occupant two things to choose between and a chance to pick the wrong one. We kept a single network name, set it to what the customer wanted, and left it there.

- An infrastructure upgrade being finished does not mean you have internet. Somebody still has to configure a router, and that somebody is not the crew who did the line.
- Test an unknown wall socket with a router you already know works. Two unknowns at once tell you nothing.
- Log in to any new router and change its admin password on the day you buy it, not on the day you depend on it.
- If a reset router still rejects the credentials on its own label, stop. That is a return, not a repair.
- A router running on a phone SIM is a reasonable stopgap and a poor permanent plan — it usually tests in the tens of Mbps.
- In a one-bedroom flat, one network name is better than two. Splitting the bands solves a coverage problem you do not have.

The upgraded wall socket was live all along and the line needed nothing but configuration, which is what nobody had been contracted to do. The new D-Link never accepted its own printed credentials even after a factory reset and went back for a refund; the TP-Link already in the flat took the settings and came online at the plan's speed, with a second TP-Link left on site as a spare, a single network name suited to a 1b1b layout, and the SIM-card router no longer needed.
升级过的墙内接口一直都是通的,这条线路缺的只是配置——而配置恰好不在任何一方的合同范围里。新买的 D-Link 即使恢复出厂之后仍然不接受它自己印在标签上的信息,已建议退款;房子里原有的 TP-Link 接受了配置并跑到套餐速度,另外留下一台 TP-Link 作为备用,按 1b1b 的户型保留了单一网络名称,那台插电话卡的路由器也不再需要了。
