This student had just arrived from China to start his bachelor's degree and did not know how Australian home internet is wired yet. He brought a Redmi (Xiaomi) router with him and then bought a TP-Link router on Amazon — and neither one worked in his Zetland apartment. The apartment is served over a DSL phone line, and both of his routers were plain wireless routers with no DSL modem inside. He had also switched provider from Occom to Superloop because he assumed the provider was at fault.

On a DSL service the phone line has to be terminated by a DSL modem before anything else. A plain wireless router only has a WAN Ethernet port — plug a phone cable into it and nothing happens, no matter how good the router is. His Redmi and his Amazon TP-Link were both router-only, no DSL modem. Before buying any router in Australia, look at the socket the internet actually comes out of in your room.

If the internet comes out of a phone-style socket, you need a DSL modem — either built into the router, or a separate box in front of it.
If it comes out of a square Ethernet socket or an NBN box, almost any normal router will work.
You do not need to memorise FTTP / FTTB / FTTN to get this right. Just look at the port and match the router to it.
Routers bought in China are usually router-only, so on a DSL apartment they will not connect no matter what you configure.

Two details from this job are worth keeping:

The account had been sitting unactivated. One phone call to the provider, and the activation email arrived in under ten minutes — waiting silently would have cost days.
On first plug-in the DSL light stayed off. That is not automatically a dead line: two calls with support, testing on the spot while they made changes on their side, and the light went solid.
Switching from Occom to Superloop never fixed anything, because the provider was never the problem — the hardware was.

If you are moving into an older Sydney apartment, check the socket first and buy once.

A phone-style socket on the wall means you need a DSL modem in the chain.
A router with no DSL port can still be reused later — as a second router or an access point behind the modem-router.
Keep the receipt: a router that is wrong for your line is not faulty, so a swap is usually easier than a warranty claim.

Result最终结果

Root cause: both of his routers were plain wireless routers with no DSL modem, so they could never terminate a DSL phone line — not Occom, not Superloop. With a DSL modem-router and two calls to get the line synced, the 100M service came up the same evening, and the bedroom wall port was wired through to his desk.

根因：他那两台都是没有 DSL 猫的普通无线路由器，根本没法终结 DSL 电话线——跟 Occom、Superloop 都没关系。换成带 DSL 口的一体机、再打两次客服电话把线路同步好，当晚 100 兆就通了，卧室的墙口也接到了他的桌子上。
