Based next to UNSW, we've walked hundreds of new students through their first Australian internet connection — most of it during O-week panic. This is the checklist we wish everyone had before landing: what to do before you fly, in week one, and the traps that catch new arrivals every single semester.

Bring your router from home if you have a good one. Most Chinese routers work fine on Australian NBN once configured — a one-minute compatibility check is in our wiki. It can save you $100+ and works with the apps you know.
家里有好路由器就带上。大多数国内路由器配置正确后在澳洲 NBN 上都能用 — 一分钟兼容性判断见我们的 wiki。能省 $100+，还能继续用你熟悉的 App。
Sort an eSIM or travel SIM for day one. You'll need data before home internet exists — for maps, the rental app, and messaging your agent. Airport SIMs work but cost more than ordering ahead.
准备好落地第一天的 eSIM 或旅行卡。家里的网通之前，地图、租房 App、联系中介都要流量。机场买卡可以，但比提前订贵。
Ask your accommodation ONE question: "Is internet included, and if not, what NBN connection type does the unit have?" Student accommodation usually includes it; private rentals usually don't. The answer changes everything you buy.
问住宿方一个问题：「网络包不包？不包的话单元是哪种 NBN 接入类型？」学生公寓通常包网；私人租房通常不包。答案决定你要买什么。
Screenshot your passport, offer letter and address. Australian ISPs verify identity when you sign up — having documents ready makes the order a 10-minute job you can even do from overseas.
护照、offer 和地址先截图存好。澳洲运营商注册时要验证身份 — 材料齐全的话下单只要 10 分钟，人还没落地就能办。
If internet is included: connect to the building WiFi, then judge it honestly for a week. Included WiFi in student buildings is shared — fine for lectures, often painful for gaming or 4K. Upgrading to your own connection is usually possible and sometimes worth it.
如果包网：先连楼里 WiFi，用一周诚实评估。学生公寓的包网是共享的 — 上网课没问题，打游戏和看 4K 经常痛苦。升级成自己的独立宽带通常可行，有时很值。
If not included: check what plans your exact address supports (connection type decides available speeds), order, and note the activation date. Plans on an already-active line can connect within days; new activations take longer — order early, not after the fridge.

Activation day: find the connection point (check above the fridge, in the wardrobe, the weak-current box by the door), plug the modem into the right socket, configure, and speed test. This is the step where most DIY setups fail — and the exact job our from-$100 student package covers, same-day.

Share house? Agree the split BEFORE ordering: whose name, how it's paid, what happens when someone moves out mid-semester. Then set up QoS so one person's downloads can't sink everyone's video call — we configure this on every share-house job.
合租？下单前先谈好：写谁的名字、怎么分摊、有人学期中途搬走怎么办。然后配置 QoS 限速，别让一个人的下载拖垮全屋的视频会议 — 合租单我们都会配。
Trap one: buying a router before knowing your connection type — an Ethernet-WAN router is useless on an FTTB phone socket. Trap two: assuming the fastest plan is the best; in many older buildings the copper can't carry it and the extra money buys nothing. Trap three: believing "connected" equals "working" — always speed test against your plan in the first week, while complaining is easy. Trap four: signing up through a random door-knocker or cold call. Order directly from the provider's site or get independent advice — we're happy to sanity-check a plan for free over WeChat before you commit.
坑一：还不知道接入类型就买路由器 — 只有网口 WAN 的路由器插在 FTTB 电话口上毫无用处。坑二：以为最快的套餐就是最好的；很多老楼的铜线根本跑不满，多花的钱买了个寂寞。坑三：以为「已连接」就是「能用」— 第一周内一定对照套餐测速，趁投诉还容易。坑四：跟上门推销或陌生来电签约。要么去运营商官网直接下单，要么先找独立的人把关 — 签约前微信发给我们免费看一眼就行。
And one honest note on speed: for lectures, assignments and streaming, a mid-tier plan is plenty. Gaming cares about ping, not bandwidth — 1–5 Mbps is all a game uses. Don't let anyone upsell you a gigabit plan "for gaming" in a share house of four.
关于网速说句实话：上课、交作业、看剧，中档套餐绰绰有余。打游戏看重的是 ping 不是带宽 — 游戏本身只用 1–5 Mbps。别让任何人以「打游戏」为名，把四人合租忽悠上千兆套餐。
