Back home you had a handful of carriers. Australia has dozens of retail providers (ISPs) all reselling the same wholesale NBN network — ABB (Aussie Broadband), Superloop, Telstra, TPG, Optus, Vodafone, Launtel, Activ8me, Exetel, Dodo, iiNet, gigafy and more. They differ on price, support quality, and routing, but the physical line into your home is the same NBN regardless of logo. After hundreds of setups, here's the short version:

• Best service / most reliable — Aussie Broadband (ABB): consistently ranks first for reliability and support; also the most expensive. The pick if you can afford it, and good for gaming.
• Best value — Superloop: mid-range price, no lock-in contract, no weird hidden fees. It's in roughly 40% of the jobs we do — the student ‘people's broadband’.
• Cheapest tier — Exetel, TPG, iiNet: lower prices, perfectly fine for streaming and study.
• Building-supplied ISP: some apartments (e.g. parts of Brisbane) are wired for a specific provider like gigafy — you just connect and pay, no choice needed.
• Chinese-speaking support — Occom: offers Mandarin service, handy if English phone support worries you (some users report the odd drop-out).

Once you sign up, the provider queues your order with NBN, then emails you the connection details. In Australia nobody comes to install your router for a standard connection — the settings arrive by email and you configure the router yourself (or we can help remotely or on-site). The typical flow:

1. Order online with your correct service address.
2. Receive an activation email/SMS — look for wording like ‘service active’, and any PPPoE username/password.
3. Plug your router's WAN port into the NBN box (or the phone/DSL socket for FTTN/FTTB), enter the connection details if required, and wait for the box's internet light to go solid.
4. Run a wired speed test to confirm you're getting your plan.

If your brand-new connection refuses to come online even though the box lights look fine, that's usually an ISP-side activation issue, not your router — we've written a whole guide on it: My new NBN connection won't work.

Normal case: the line activates within 1–3 business days; sometimes the activation email lands within an hour and you're online the same day. Slow case: if nothing has happened after 3 days, the line usually needs an NBN or Opticomm technician to attend, which can push it out a week or more — especially at a brand-new address or during the Feb/March move-in rush.

A tempting mistake is to cancel and re-order with a different provider because you're impatient. Don't — it rarely helps. The new ISP still has to go through the exact same NBN provisioning queue, so you just reset the clock. Better to stay put and push your current ISP to log a fault or chase the NBN appointment.

Two things drive your first bill:

• Your plan: monthly cost depends on speed tier and provider (we don't quote figures here because ISP pricing changes constantly — check the current rate on the provider's site).
• New Development Fee: if the address has never had an NBN service before (common in brand-new buildings), NBN charges a one-off connection fee — commonly around A$300, though it varies. If someone lived there with internet before, you usually skip this.

Most providers do not charge for moving your service when you relocate, and many give a small new-customer discount for the first ~6 months. Ask about a referral/invite code — they're often worth a few to a few dozen dollars off.

Almost always no. Most ISPs let you bring your own router, and a decent third-party router is usually better value than the one they upsell. A provider-supplied router is mainly convenience — it can be pricier, and a ‘free’ one usually locks you into a 1–2 year contract with early-exit or equipment fees if you leave. The one thing that matters is that your router matches your connection type (a plain gigabit router for FTTP/HFC; a VDSL-capable modem-router for FTTN/FTTB). Don't overpay for headline speed you can't feel. As a rule of thumb:

For most students 100M is plenty and 500M is the value sweet spot for a share house. Remember: the plan is only the ceiling — your router, cabling and WiFi decide whether you actually reach it (see slow-speed troubleshooting).

Based on our own calls with the top providers (ABB and Superloop in particular). Rules differ by provider, so always confirm the current policy with yours:

• How: cancellation is normally by phone only — two-factor identity rules mean email/chat usually can't close an account, and the account holder must call.
• Notice: most providers want about 30 days' notice. You can often stop service on a chosen date, but ‘disconnected’ is not the same as ‘billed to zero’ — billing may run to the end of a cycle.
• Superloop (from our calls): cancel within the call, and service typically ends at midnight on day 31.
• ABB (from our calls): service is disconnected by NBN on the morning of your chosen date.
• Fees: no-contract + your own router usually means you're just billed to the cut-off. On a contract with a supplied modem (often Telstra/Optus, 2–3 yr) you may owe device cost or an early-exit fee.

Going home for the summer break? You don't have to keep paying for internet nobody's using. One student on a ~A$90/month, 500–1000M plan paused it over the break — roughly A$3/day saved, and over a long break that adds up to a meaningful amount. Because most providers need ~30 days' notice, plan ahead:

1. Call (or have us call) your provider about a month before you leave, asking to disconnect on a specific date.
2. Wait for the cancellation confirmation email.
3. When you're back, simply re-apply — you can often qualify again for the new-customer first-6-months discount.

Most providers have an app that makes checking status, bills and basic troubleshooting far easier. Aussie Broadband's myAussie is a good example:

• Download: search ‘myAussie’ on the App Store (needs an Australian Apple ID) or Google Play.
• First login: your username is in the sign-up email; use the link there to set a password, or use ‘forgot password’ and verify with details like your date of birth.
• Track progress: the home screen shows a pending status while your connection is being set up (tap for the exact stage), or your active address and plan once live.
• Troubleshoot: built-in tools let you check device connection status and run a speed test.
