How to Call for Help When There's No Network (High-Rise Emergencies)

The most important signal is the one that reaches help when everything else is down. Students living alone overseas — this one's worth saving.

When the network fails, know these当网络失效时,先知道这些

In an extreme emergency — a high-rise fire, an earthquake, a major outage — mobile towers can lose power and your phone can lose all signal. Knowing how to call for help without a network can genuinely matter. As a network business we spend our days on connectivity, but the most important signal is the one that reaches help when everything else is down. This is a safety explainer, not network troubleshooting.

If mobile networks are down移动网络不可用时

  1. Try an emergency call (000 in Australia; 112 works on many phones and can route through any available network). Emergency calls can sometimes connect even when normal calls can't.
  2. Send an SMS for help — a text can get through on weaker signal than a voice call, so it's worth trying when calls fail.
  3. Use your phone's offline SOS — on iPhone, press the side button five times; many Android phones have an SOS that sounds an alarm and flashes the light even with no signal. These can make sound and light to attract attention and help rescuers locate you.

Visual & sound signals

When you can't communicate outward at all, focus on being found:

  • At a window: wave a bright cloth or use a torch to signal; movement and light draw attention.
  • Sound: a whistle carries far, needs no power, and is less tiring than shouting; knocking on pipes or walls in a rhythm also travels.
  • Torch over phone flashlight: a dedicated torch lasts far longer and is brighter for signalling.

Building emergency systems

Most high-rise buildings have systems that don't depend on your phone: fire alarm break-glass points, emergency intercoms/warden phones, and fire stairs with signage. Learn where these are when you move in. In a fire, if you can't safely exit, the standard advice is to stay in a closed, low-smoke room, block gaps under doors to keep smoke out, and keep signalling your presence so firefighters can find you.

What to prepare (nothing risky)

  • A fully-charged high-capacity power bank at home.
  • A torch (saves phone battery vs the flashlight).
  • A simple whistle (no power, audible far).
  • Set emergency contacts and Medical ID in your phone; know your floor number and the exit locations.
  • Keep a phone charged and know your building's assembly point.

Priority order when there's no network

  1. Emergency call (000 / 112) — system-level, may connect when normal calls don't.
  2. SMS for help — can succeed on very weak signal.
  3. Offline SOS (iPhone side button ×5 / Android SOS).
  4. Window light/wave signals; whistle or knocking.
  5. Building alarm points / intercoms.
  6. Shelter in a low-smoke room and keep signalling your presence until rescued.
  3. 离线 SOS(iPhone 侧键连按 5 次 / 安卓 SOS)。

Frequently asked questions

What's the emergency number in Australia?

000 is the primary emergency number in Australia (for police, fire and ambulance). 112 also works from mobile phones and can route through any available network, which is useful when your own carrier has no signal.

How do I call for help if my phone has no signal?

Try an emergency call (000/112) — these can connect via any network. If calls fail, send an SMS (works on weaker signal), use your phone's offline SOS (iPhone side button five times), and make light/sound signals (torch, whistle) to be located.
